And then she made a book out of her paper.
Earlier this term Eowyn became very determined to learn how to make paper - all on her own. At school she asked her teacher (as relayed to me by Eowyn), "Some people can make paper. I want to make paper. How do you make paper?"
Her very encouraging teacher helped her find a book about paper making in the school library: Paper Making by Susie O'Reilly. I also wrote to teacher, artist and paper maker Velma Bolyard and asked for some child friendly paper making tips. She happily obliged and her advice was very helpful.
We set a date to make our paper, invited my friend Jo and her daughter (who is Eowyn's age) over to make paper with us, Peter set about making a deckle and mould and the two girls made paper together!
When I asked Eowyn what she wanted to do with her paper, she said she wanted to make a book about how she made paper. Both Peter and I helped her as far as getting the steps in the right order and when she felt stuck in her writing or spelling. After her book was completed Eowyn took it into school for show and tell. She also wrote a lovely thank you letter to Velma.
You can see each page of Eowyn's book in my flickr set, she made paper. Do have a look at the individual pages, they are quite gorgeous (clicking the link above will take you to the flickr set, clicking on the photo below will take you to the flickr page for the photo collage, but the photo set should be easily found from there too)
We are so proud of Eowyn - she has learned so much more than a method of making paper, don't you think?

seeing the whole story of eowyn's book really makes me happy to be part of the story. i think she did a fine job and i like the mix of her lettering and drawing and the photographs.
