give away time :)

Comments have been closed, a winner will be announced very soon. Thank you for all you positive comments and encouragement.:)

a collection
{4 petticoats, intended for the shop}

I'm so excited - I can't tell you how much - that I have finally gotten my shop into working order!

Last night Peter and I celebrated with a toast of chardy and a little dance - a very small amount of wine can make me feel quite silly, but I think Peter enjoyed the dancing. I know I did ;)

I want to celebrate with all of you, my readers old and new with a special give away. The four little petticoats in my photo above, are destined for my shop, later this week. The littlest one on the right, "recital dress (haiku)" is already there, just to help this shop thing feel very official for me in the meantime!

I would love to offer you a chance to win one of these dresses, as a thank you for all your kind comments, emails, facebook messages and reading. I do ramble on at times, and I just think it is so awesome that there are some people out there (even other than my mom! love you mom...) that take their time to stop by.

Thank you!

To enter this give away please, as is customary, leave a comment on this post and tell me which petticoat you like the very best and why, or what sort of little art dress you might like to see me make and sell in the (hopefully near!) future.

I have really enjoyed making these stitched petticoat forms, each one in it's very beginning was like blank three-dimensional canvas in which I could dream and play. Each dress represents a fleeting moment in a woman's memory (maybe mine) imagined in the shape of a dress. I'll be sharing some more of those details as I list the pieces in my shop. I don't want to spoil too many surprises at once, you know?

And, to give credit where credit is due, these little petticoats were very much inspired by India Flint, her exhibit planeta and her book, Eco-Colour. I have been reading it off and on for the past 6 months and a bit now (it was even requested once as a bedtime story by eowyn) - trying to absorb some of her magic with coaxing colour out of plants ... she is amazing. My petticoats were the first of my plant-dying expirement that weren't altogether brown, and now I think I will be hooked. Thank you, India. One day I shall get myself to one of your workshops, one day soon I do hope!

So please, tell you friends, and don't forget to leave a comment on this post. Which is your favourite petticoat? I think I know which is my favourite, but I haven't made a firm decision yet. One of them is very special to me though!

I will close the comments and announce a winner on this Friday, 26 June at 10 pm Melbourne time. I am looking forward to hearing from you, as I always do ;)

edited to add 23.6.09 - To add a bit of clarity, I thought I would note that the dresses are by no means wearable. A fact I wrote in my etsy description, but forgot to note here :)
My apologies if I gave that impression! The largest petticoat is only just shy of 30cm tall. They are also not intended to be used as doll's clothes. Purely decorative ;) I have one that hangs on my wall, to cheer me up. It reminds me of a lovely gallery visit I had with a friend when Eowyn was just 1 year old.

Much love and thanks,

Jeana Marie

ps - i almost forgot! tomorrow i want to introduce you to our fish!

Hmm, a favorite is too hard--but I *think* my favorite is the one on the far left with all the ruffly, rumply girly goodness. And that pleated skirt is just perfect!

I love them so very much! Specially the second one from the right. I like the doily it has, and the red detail and the straps.
I would like to see one of these with a Laura Ingalls' style that I like so much. I even have a dress in that style that I was planning to post today in some pictures...
Good luck with your shop!!!

Hi Jeana,

Blog post is up:

http://ohpeacefulday.blogspot.com/2009/06/someone-id-like-you-to-meet.html

Let me know if there is anything you'd like me to change.

My favourite of your dresses is the one in your store, recital dress/haiku. I love its exquisite miniature perfection.

Talk soon.

Oh, I love them all. I can pick my favorite very easily. The one with the doily! I wore a petticoat once for my younger brother's wedding. Pink dresses with umbrellas and puffy fluffy petticoats. I might be old style but I like wearing slips under dresses. It makes me feel very feminine.

hi jeana,
exciting news about your shop! congrats. i am torn between the one on the far left and the haiku dress. i think the one on the far left reminds me of an old ball gown that could have been worn by the likes of elizabeth bennett. and i love that. all the best to you!

delighted that eco colour was being read as a bed-time story....

Hello
I have recently bought eco-colour myself. very impressed and spending too much time picking leaves in the garden! I like them all - hard to choose, but i rather like the one second from the left. perhaps because that shape is what i wish my body would fit :)

Hi JM
These are lovely nostalgic pieces, they look like discarded lovelies that have been discovered in a nana shop. I actually love the look of the cloth underneath the dresses. Like India, I'd love someone else to win a lovely, so don't include me in the drawer. I have too many things already. Such is the life of the collector. And I too love India's book, it's inspiring and full of yummy eye candy. Happy dyeing, experimenting, stitching and playing. I look forward to seeing what other pieces you develop as this looks like the beginning of your discoveries.

Hi Jeanamarie, thanks so much for your flickr message. I really love all your petticoat forms, but especially the third one along and I would dearly love to win it! I love it because it reminds me of a dress I used to wear a lot when I was around 18 and my husband loved it. As it was a hot hot summer I wore it a lot to some very special places with him! Also, unbelievably coincidentally, my maiden name was Flint so this makes your giveaway super special to me!

I would love to win it, but would be delighted for whoever wins the little dress and thank you Jeanamarie for a gorgeous giveaway!

Love n best wishes, Carolyn

Hello, I found you via Jeanne's blog. Your dresses are beautiful, and my girls would love any of them. My favourite would have to be the "recital dress (haiku)" just because it's so completely unique. I look forward to coming back to visit more often.

These are so beautiful. You're a clever one. I think my favourite is the one with the little crochet detail...no surprise there. Big ups to you & glad you had a little drink & a little dance.

i really like how each one is so specific that we can certainly tell you had a wearer in mind. i like the first from the left and third from the left, the tiny detail on the third just grabs me! and of course the natural dying you do in the making of them is beautiful jeana.

Alicia A. said...

wow. they are amazing.

the one with the doily on the skirt. Yes, yes. That one.

:)

I love the one on the far left. The colour is gorgeous. And that one reminds me of when I was about 7 and loved spinning in dresses like that so the skirts swirled out. *happy sigh*

MissyP said...

Oh Jeanna, you have been busy haven't you?! (Have you finished all your school work???). BEAUTIFUL little petticoats, and if you do a course with India, please take me with you.

Now, the bit to get me entered into your giveaway... either of the two in the middle - perhaps the one on the left if it is plainer. Those two remind me of what the Ingal's girls wore under their clothes on Little House on the Prairie. Takes me WAYYYYY back.

I have actually looked at your post lots of times but have been unable to choose between them all. In the end I decided based around what I would most like to wear if I were a tiny thumbelina type person and it was easy. The one with the crochet detail next to the sweet little haiku one. I would wear it and run though forests of grass and jump onto a dragonfly's back and be carried to a rose petal where I would nap on its velvety softness. Yes, I did think about your dresses for a long time...

That is so cute! I like the biggest one best. Got to bookmark this blog!

How incredibly charming! I have been reading about the petticoats that the women of New England made and wore in the 1700s. It was quite cold in the winter, so they would quilt the skirt. But instead of a standard quilt method, some creative ladies would freeform sea monsters and the like. It should be noted that their husbands were often gone for long periods of time out at sea.

I think the second petticoat from the left is very pretty. A sort of coming of age but still innocent look that reminded me of the Sound of Music's gazebo scene, "I am sixteen going on seventeen."

They are all gorgeous - your attention to detail is amazing! I think my favourite is the green one on the left.

Congratulations on the opening of your shop.

wow... I am taken away by the creativity you have !! For some reason I am really drawn to the one with the crochet detailing.... but then again the one on the far right with the green embellishment has a hidden refinement.... too cute to choose. Well done.

and in my excitement I forgot the details.... which is which dress and why, of course.... so I think the first really enchants me because it looks like the kind of dress you could literally loose yourself within, swirl around, get very giddy and even if you were all alone you could enjoy an evening of moonlight...

My favorite petticoat is the 3rd from the left.
It has such simple beauty and I would love to wear something like that. love the detail! It would be fun to see little "Laura Ashley" dresses complete with "bloomers or petticoats".
love your blog. Thank you!

How special each dress is! My favorite is the third from the left with the doily. I also noticed your background fabric. Something old and something new. How about making a "vintage" wedding dress or nightgown.

Oh, how to choose?! The green reminds me of a flower girl's gown i wore for my aunt's wedding when I was 4 -- as you said, a "fleeting moment." The strapless is for the vamp i wanted to be (for more than a fleeting moment) but could never pull off!

I love the one on the far right because of the bodice and the colour. All of them are lovely.

These are sooo beautiful! I love, love, love your blog and thank you kindly for offering this chance to win one of your amazing treasures. I am hard pressed to pick a favorite, but I guess I would pick the second from the right.
Best wishes for long success in your shop...:)

Your petticoats are textile poetry! I can't pick out a favorite, but I do love the haiku you included with your violin recital memory dress. Last night at my writing group we wrote about how a particular outfit captured a moment in time, based on the book, "Love, Loss and What I Wore" by Ilene Beckerman. Your work definitely does that in such a beautiful way!
